Pagkamakatao

Our lives are constantly changing as we move from one world to another and we are given different meanings, different directions, different atmospheres and different inspirations by these various worlds. There are values connected with each of these worlds, each of them contributing meaning, direction, atmosphere and inspiration to life. Just as we live these various worlds of business, family and religion so we live the values of these worlds, present as they are in the context of our lives as Filipino.

When I was 18, I was invited by my friend to accompany her in Buluan, a Muslim community/municipality. I knew how dangerous the status of peace and order situation of the place. Subsequently, the people there are mostly Muslim tribe. I had a bad connotation about this tribe because of heresies and rumors about their negative actions and behaviors. Actually, I was afraid mingling with them, except to my only special friend who is a pure Maguindanaon blood. Though fears and worries of what might happen to me there supersede my emotions, I cannot refuse her favor. For two days of being there, I was amazed of what I discovered. The persons I thought before was really different when I was there. At first, aloofness is explicitly observed. When I approach them, they responded with humility. I really appreciate their sincerity. As time and a day had passed, I already talked to people there without any hesitation. It was just like the barriers that hinder me to have such conversation as disappeared for a moment. The respect that existed is a manifestation of Pagkamakatao as a core of Filipino values. The humility that enlivens between tribes is a Filipino value worthy to emulate. Respecting one’s belief, culture and traditions shows the primary source and genuine evidence of Pagkamakatao. It serves as a bridge in our diverse culture and differences.

Another unforgettable experience happened to me two weeks ago. I took a ride in the tricycle from school to town that was Friday free afternoon. I was struck by the behavior of the driver. From the fact that I was new to this place – Cotabato City, I learned to secure my belongings before anything else wherever I go to avoid bad experiences or events to happen. When I gave my fair to him, he refused because he had no change for my money. My ride was free. I was very happy and smiles of stupendous reaction were struck me so much not because of free ride by because of the kindness and consideration that the driver expressed to me. It was a trust though that person just knew me for a while. It manifested by the values of Pagkamakatao.

Pagkamakatao as a core Filipino value will lead to total development of our community, our country as a whole. It is an essential characteristic in determining higher values. It will lead us to become a virtuous so we can be able to know what is right and do what is right. It may guide u sto recognize what is ethical or unethical and what is moral or immoral. It is based on our culture, in our standard and in our principle.

Hospitality, bayanihan and religiosity are some other Filipino values that we can develop. We are known with these values and it can bring us into the pedestal of progress and development. It is our mark as a true Filipino. It reminds us of our past, determines our present and foresees our future. It can build nation’s destiny. It serves as a bridge that synergizes people to common direction. It builds our culture for a strong foundation. In religious context, it holds and strengthens our faith and belief that made us Filipino known to the world as happy person despite the hardships that we encounter. These values are not just recognizing pleasure and pain, vital principle or aesthetics but it leads towards higher values. It generates depth fulfillment and contentment. These values are our identity for it becomes dimensions of our unique lives as we live them. It upholds our social context that we shared with others in a constant flux.

Somehow the value that moves us is beyond time, beyond the constant changes that occur in the process of time. It is something whose importance is experienced as eternal. Inspired by such a value we are moved to live in a way that is consistent with it by dedicating ourselves in an enduring way. We are promoting permanently the common good, the living up to the ideals of our culture, to the creation of beauty or to the bridges that mediate our differences. A commitment endures through time since it is inspired by a value which is above time.

It is indeed a manifestation that we grow, we change, we learn and we prosper. As time passes by, let us exert great effort to sustain and fortify the Filipino values that we have. So good to say that the next generation will experience the good and ideal cultural values that we have today.

Gospel Reflection

Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James and Jose and Judas and Simon? These words came from the villagers who wanted to keep Him within his limitations; he was a carpenter and the son of a carpenter. With this, Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith.

Upon reading the Gospel passage last night, I tried to imagine what word or in what way of my experience in life I am going to reflect this reading. Then, the word rejection struck me. This is what had happened to Jesus in Nazareth. This is what our Gospel speaks about.

When I was in the first and second year high school, somehow, I was one on those students who became the laughing stock or our class. I was the weird, short and thin man having “bakatin na pantalon at naninilaw na unifmorm”. I was one na sinasabihan na bobo sa English, walang alam, pangit at mahirap pa sa daga. Kung bayaran sa school ako ang laging huli magbayad. There was a time that I need to feel all the insulting words and embarrassments na binibitawan ng aming makulit na treasurer. Tanggap ko for it is partly true and I have no choice but to choose and live that way, that situation. I think that’s beyond my limitation. I think no need na ipamukha pa sa akin iyon. These are the experiences of rejection, no doubt, because of this situation, this made me to be inferior, to seclude myself from them, and resort to self pity. I struggled a lot. I endured all the pains. Unfortunately, this limits me to many opportunities. I became the weakest person in class, in academics, in physical activities and I couldn’t even say that I have true friends. When I transferred to another school, I still carried those heartaches. But, there was someone taught me to stand firm in my disposition in life, to be strong in pushing my claims if I do believe it is true and the truth per se. He challenged me. I responded positively. Sir Max Espejo was my Geometry teacher. The trust he gave to me boost my confidence. That was the beginning of my journey as a student free from my deep sleep. 360 degree changed weak to strong. In that predicament, I was able to believe in myself, to strive harder, have faith and do more dreams.

In the process of acceptance, I tried to discover on how to overcome prejudices, the rejection – objectification of the other subjects.

Just try to look at the mirror. This object will give reflections of who you are, what you are. As human beings, we are amenable that we are in the formation of life because of our imperfections. Imperfections that we should not hide upon but we need to address accordingly for us to grow and become mature individual. Looking at the mirror, do not wear your mask. Do not be afraid or deny your weaknesses. Try also to consider your strengths. In so doing, you will realize how gifted you are, how special are you in the eyes of God. If others will judge you because of your weaknesses, let them be. This might be an act of rejection, of prejudices. This might deprive us to grab opportunities. This might discourage us to believe. But try to think of it that if someone wants you to pull down, it connotes you are above from them. Insecurities, I should say. This thing has nothing to do for you to grow; it will just ruin your life.

In all that I have shared with you, there are three points I would like to emphasize.
Overcome prejudices
The gift of fortitude of the Holy Spirit will be my refuge in conquering and facing prejudices, judgments and rejection of others. Basically, some are more inclined to tell all my negatives, my minuses, my shortcomings, criticize me if I fail and tend to forget what good things I have done. Self awareness is a vital foundation to know myself better. I learn to appreciate myself, of what I have and what I am. If others will criticize me, judge me, I will just stop and reflect for a moment – accept my weaknesses and be inspired with my strengths to do more. Ang taong mahilig mamintas, palaging nakikita ang kapintasan ng iba ay ang taong maraming kapintasan. They are who do not believe and do not have faith.

Do believe
I can because I believe. I must be cognizant of my own strength. In every endeavor, I must believe that I can because I believe. If I fail, believe that I can achieve the acme of success, not by now but later on, soon. If I fall, believe that I can stand. If I buffeted by the winds and storms, believe that I can overcome it. If I think I don’t like to study, most probably, I will be getting bored in studying my lessons. It is a matter of personal conviction. It’s a matter how I hold my decision. My optimism and my attitude in looking forward are great factors in reaching the success I aspire of. I do believe.

Have faith
All my undertakings must be rooted and directed towards Him. In any leaps and bounds, if I falter in darkness, trusts and confidence I lay down to Him. I believe and I am convinced that in my faith, I will see God perform mighty deeds for me, for all of us. Nothing is impossible in Him. With these experiences I had, I am very thankful that God guides me all the way, until this time of my journey. He enables me to realize my weaknesses, tests my patience and strengthens my faith. Just have faith and everything will run through and through – according to His will.

This is a challenge to all of us now to overcome prejudices, do believe and have faith. No one is in-charge of our own happiness, our own life except us together with Jesus Christ. We have our own free will to choose what we think we need and we ought to be and to do. I can compare our life to an egg. We hold our own life together with God. We manage to control and do things according to our will in the light of His will. If we are too easy and careless in holding it, it might fall. If we are too harsh or rough, it might be broken. Thus, we need neither too easy nor too rough. Balance it. If we decide not to overcome prejudices, if we don’t believe in ourselves and if we don’t have faith in God, our life will be ruined. We should not listen to the prejudices; we must believe and have faith in God so that we may see the good works of Jesus as what the villagers of Nazareth failed to do. So let us pray to God to grant us the grace and courage to be faithful in Him despite the rejection we may encounter. We also continue to pray that we may grow in His love and goodness and enable us to share it to others. Amen.

Be Rational...

Being wise is better than being strong; yes, knowledge is more important that strength. After all, you must make careful plans before you fight a battle and the more good advice you get, the more likely you to win (Proverb 24:5-6). We should act as human being endowed by nature to live in such a way in order to win right decision and to get right formula of success. So, be rational.

Where does human life lead? A question to ponder, a guide for us in queuing our way and a gesture of finding meaning in life are concerns that make us stop, look and listen akin to the traffic light. These enable us to think and take deep reflection out of it.

As human as we are, we are pointed in certain directions, certain end, certain predicament that will satisfy our own life self toward certain purpose – our goal. Despite the interminable battle of searching and doggedly finding for the desired truth, it seems to be cunning on our part to understand our purpose. It may somehow a cause of confusions and doubts of what really kind of road we must take: a sort of decision making. Notwithstanding, the future that we live nowadays are fulfilled of different things – things that we want to possess, to experience, to do, to attain and to realize, we still focus and vehemently believe that we can achieve it for it is our own gusto. It may give us euphoria in things that lift up our spirit. These are elements of our human goal in life. The bottom-line is we want o become wiser and happier to some extent. Satisfaction? We’re very far from that! The more achievements and things happened to our life the more we become ambitious in doing more strides towards more and better. In positive sense, it really makes sense.

Happiness is the realization of our goals, our desires. These desires must be achieved through human will which obliviously piquant reference to universal appetite of good in deepest consciousness. The will that we possess must coordinate and should work hand in hand with reason. Reason is that makes us human and for him to be such is to exercise his rationality and enables him to be distinct from other lower beings such as animals and plants.

The reason is a gift. It posits us with opulent idea in decision making. It enlivens us worth plausible argument to carry out our plans and dreams. It upholds dire hubbub in the full terrain of our minds so as to wake from nasty sleep of ignorance. Using our reason, I think will surely prove our existence. It follows to live in either outback or abode realm of our essence. This reason is innate in us. We will use this considering what is reasonable for us to do in our lives.

According to Descartes, human beings would be wiser and happier if they use reason to guide and control their emotions, instincts and passions. For me, it is true. It is necessary for us to do in such away; it will guide us to more meaningful and jocund way of life. Emotions, instincts and passions are elements that commonly strive towards pleasure and away from pain. In life’s lesson, it doesn’t mean that pleasure is always rights and true, it might be a deceiver. These may eschew us to our goals of ultimate reality and lead us to uncertainty and perplexed mind set. These only provide vague and vulpine idea of what real is. We may be gullible of such deceiver. These appeal to our impolitic excuses and favorable benefits. We may feel that it is good and ideal for us as it pleases us but not to all or to others. We must not embrace this kind of condition instead we must try to scuttle and unchain ourselves from this snare. As a rational being, we have that obligation to exercise what is expected for us to be unless we are going to efface the identity of being such. That is being rational and to develop our rationality. Since rationality offers us the capacity of free decision, we have the moral obligation using our reason to make free decisions about the important choices in our lives. We must identify what should and should not applicable in certain situation and to its greater extent. Thus, it must be based on universal standard of morality where we live in for the benefits of all. We must balance the advantages and disadvantages not only mending the emotional aspect of ours. With these vehement spirit and compassionate deportment of giving great significance on the value of reason, no doubt, positive result will come albeit not just today but it will surely do tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

As to the experience is concern, the banalization of today’s generation may seem to be prevalent. Addiction is present for it gives pleasure and enjoyment. But to what extent? Why live in moderation and be an active member of the community? Pre-marital sex is commonly resulted from sexual pleasure rather that preserving one’s virginity and taking care of the sacredness of sex. Is it lust? Politicians are mostly involved in graft and corruption for it provides them pleasure, fame, political authority and greediness of material things. But until when? Why live in public service? What makes this thing happened? Irrationality. For a person to destroy his potentialities for fuller life is absurd and crazy. They tend to become irrational.

Sometimes, we may incline to refuse the inner voice of reason behind our mind that makes us foolish and consequently drags us to the pit of errors. This must not be overwhelmed us. We must use our reason and control our emotions, instincts and passions to guide our way to wiser and happier life. The reason must entirely dominate our whole consciousness for a plausible outcome. We should be firm and hold this disposition. Use your will. Mend in reason. Thus, you will gain peace.

Tomorrow Never Comes

As I followed the footsteps to the hallway that night, I kept of thinking of how I am going to start my reflection about inner garbage. Before I reach my destination, I took a glimpse on one corner of the pathways and read this line, “Happiness consists more in small conveniences or pleasures that occur everyday, than in great pieces of good fortune that happen but seldom”. I do agree with the statement. It is plebian thing that we must do yet we find it unknown when we are confronted by different concerns. It seems that this dictum relates on how to treat every moment in distinctive way which I think owned by a person who experience fulfillment and full satisfaction from little things he grasps and enjoys ultimately living his life. He may be a happy person performing his own will putting great significance to every pages of his journey as an errand.

There was a story which subtle germane to this dictum. In the midst of survival and competition of one’s own life, there was a man who was very busy in all his life preparing for the good future of his only little girl. The child grew very smart, jolly and loving in spite of the absence of her biological mother. All the material needs were being provided by the father. The time for bonding and recreation for the father and the daughter seemed to have a sporadic encounter. It is because the father was busy in doggedly providing all her needs. One time, the daughter asked the father to help her in doing her assignments but convulsively the father refused to her favor. The daughter felt envious about her father’s attention on his work. Vouchsafe his attention was more appealing and vintage need than material things that the father was trying to live out for her future. Until such time, she kept on complaining of mischievous feeling at that time. But the father was incredulous of what the child had been grumbling of; instead he berated her because of disturbing him from his work. After three days, the child died. The father became plaintive and full of regrets of what had happened. And he could not bring back the life of his loving lost daughter.

Sometimes, we tend so engrossed with the pressure we put to our goals. We forget others though in some sense we do all these for them and for ourselves. We are gullible of what future ahead of us. We are so worried about what will happen tomorrow. We are so busy of building up for the next day and tend to forget the essence of the present.

Personally, worries are considered as my inner garbage. It is deeply rooted in or complementary with fears. I keep on doing things so deeply infatuated, with so much attention for the future without thinking of today. I was very compassionate of putting things into action thinking of tomorrow. It is all because of worries. It leads me not to enjoy the present and so worried about the day ahead of me. I am very anxious of what will happen to me. Just like the father in the story, I did it likewise. I used to disregard others. I used to sacrifice my own happiness for advantage in the future. There is nothing wrong about it but too much is not good. I felt that I do not enjoy anymore what I am doing. I became future oriented. This sinner garbage brought me in despair. It crumpled my time. It obliterated my energies to preposterous action. It killed my enjoyment. It stymied my purpose to live my life – a demeanor that deprived me to appreciate every moment.

These worries tend to hang me up at the seclude horizon of arid place of my consciousness. It leads me to impolitic decision in facing life’s vicissitudes. It becomes a problem that I carry everywhere I go. It becomes a part of me. And I do not want this any longer to prevail in my inner self. It is an excruciating phenomenon that kicked me off on my designed purpose.

With these circumstances, how am I going to transcend myself moving forward and moving away those hindrances on my path? These worries must be replaced by faith. Worry is a route that leads from somewhere to nowhere. I will never let it direct my life. I will consider my goal as my endpoint of what I am doing today. But in staidness we should not be over powered by such goals that may stupefy and may lead of rejecting others. I must take every action in suave manner. I will let each day to be treated as a special day. I will give importance in every minute of my life. It is a part of me, a part of my goal and a part of my future. It is my reveling intention to set aside the things that made me worry about for tomorrow. I will live each day as if it will be my last day. I will enjoy every second, minute and hour of my existence. I will beat my best. I will believe that today is my own design for tomorrow. What I am going to do to the present will affect my future. I must believe that I can carry things with optimism and courage to face all these tribulations and trails in life. I will treat these as a challenge to strengthen my faith to Him. I am convinced that it leads me to self-reflection and a way of discernment of what I might be. I will believe that today is the day and tomorrow and the day after tomorrow will be another day.

So worry no more, for us not to enslave what is ahead of us. Live each day a happy day. These small conveniences and pleasures may serve as good food for healthy lifestyle – free from stress and internal pressures. Do not worry and do not fear. Instead, I will take fear and worry to the Lord for I know He will care for me and never leave me alone in my journey as I enjoy each moment I live in his created world. Live today.

Another Day to Start With

Learn to say “no”. Be selective. Taking on too many commitments unable you to do your very best on each one.

As a social being, I tend to relate myself to others, building good rapport with them, cultivating relationship and making friends could be. This is how I see life as a person. No man is an island, they should say. But out of the mundane idea, it makes me realize that I could not please everyone. Making yes to what others want me to be or to do will please them. However, I am not here to be slave of what others want me. It may destroy my existence as a rational being. And I don’t want it to happen. I must learn also to say “”no” sometimes. It could be in times of my unavailability, if it is out of my capacity, if it lacks of preparation.

Saying yes to many good things may one of the devil’s tricks. This will end up in mediocrity in everything and excellent in nothing. This is so because it will lead someone to lose focus in certain aspect. In life we need also to focus. Saying no may not mean to be doing never. No may mean not right now. Saying no to lesser things can mean saying yes to priorities in your life. Thus, learn to say no. It is not an act of fear or anxiety rather it is an act of giving priorities to higher values and a decision to do the best you can.

Pray for a change. Pray about every choice you make.

Prayer is a powerful way that really a mystery for me. Only my faith can testify how it works to my life. It is a good start to pray in making decision. Even in starting your day, prayer will make it some kind of miraculous way. Prayer as a personal conversation with God to whom we believe is the best way to live our daily life. It may bring you peace of mind because your faith will guide and tell you that there is someone who will guard you.

Amazing things start happening when we start praying. Prayer time is never wasted time. Prayers can’t be answered until they are prayed. Begin to realize more and more that prayer is the most important thing to do. You can use your time to no better advantage than to pray whenever you have an opportunity to do so either alone or with others, while at work, while at rest, while walking at the street. Everywhere!

Personally, there were times in my life that somehow prayer is my shield and my faith in my heart. It was usually happened in my spiritual dryness. It seemed that life for me is meaningless, futile, pointless direction. It somehow holds me up with despair. However, in prayer by just asking for “Help!”, it made me realize how it really works and how miracle makes a way. This makes me prove how God’s intervention through prayer helps me a lot. This makes prayer change not just for a change.

A Journey in the Love of God

It is a natural phenomenon in our journey towards our goals to encounter myriad of life’s vicissitudes. It is like riding in a roller coaster. It is a challenging encounter. It is an adventure that needs to overcome and surpass. We find it so unusual because we are just expecting of good things to come. We have a feeling of doubt whatsoever we are facing in every moment. We are so engrossed of what to think, decide and act determined by some outside influences that may direct or indirect motivate us to do and behave to such. These are some manifestations that struck our ego in leading our way to our own desires. It seems to be that we are afraid, that we are full of anxieties, that we are lack of faith. It may somehow hinder us to make a decision, a choice or stand because of our fears of whatever may happen – consequences. These fears and worries will lead us to arid horizon of our comfort zone. We are just like a patient in an isolation who can do nothing but wait. Consequently, this kind of outlook may obstruct us to feel and realize the true essence of love. It is because we are so focused to or own self. We tend to be selfish. We are only mending our own feelings and concerns. We intend to find and search only for our own happiness and satisfaction. We try to forget others. We become self-centered. We disregard others. We despise God.

Basically, every individual may experience this kind of predicament and I myself can testify for that. For almost three months in my work outside the formation, many things had changed. From day to day encounter, many lessons had learned. But I came to realize that I became so exhausted coping with the lifestyle, community life and even in the workplace. I felt that I became a robot because of the expectation of the people that surround me. It is very difficult to live in expectation. I followed the very ideal thing they think I should be, but complains and clamors were really inside of me trying to burst for so long I tempted to hide. Is it blind acceptance of what is at hand? I thought I was. Thinking and convincing myself that it was part of my formation to be a better person I need to be and to become was my primary concern that time. I felt that I have no choice. I must to ensue them, “I have no free will anymore”. I had a feeling of isolation – a feeling that someone was holding my neck so tight. It somehow forced me to violate rules, to do whatever I want, but I tried to calm and be temperate. For a week, I felt so in despair, alone in my room I rented and no one to talk to and feeling of burden upon my shoulder supersedes in my entire being. I did not know what to do.

Prayer was my only weapon at that time. Those days were full of personal reflection, of individual of inner questions, of tears and confessions, of isolation and of unending conversation with Him. I cannot sleep. There were so many things that bothered in my mind. Only prayer healed all those tribulations. That was a tremendous experience that I have encountered as of the moment in the world of work.

With these experiences, I became insolent and absurd in thinking of myself. Thinking about my fears, worries, concerns, desires, emotions, all other inner garbage and myself alone was my foolish mistake. It made me compressed ready to dump in a garbage pit. It made me depressed. With these circumstances, I must leave out myself from my cocoon and open my heart to love and be loved. I must live a life which is pleasing to Him. In faith and trust in Him, I must accept this reality.

I do accept the fact I am still young. In my juvenile mind, I am still immature, a neophyte in this kind of battle. With my armor which is my desire and personal conviction and my shield which is my faith, I will conquer any hindrances that I will encounter. Adjustment is what I need (again?). It will not take place just in a snap of my finger rather it needs enough time. Now, I realize that there are lots of struggles and crises to overcome in my journey in this road less travel. I learn to open myself fully to God. I learn to despise myself to feel the real love – God. To experience the true happiness and genuine peace of mind, I leave all that I am to God and He will do the rest according to His will. That is the greatest learning I have.

“Love of self to the contempt of God and love of God to the contempt of self.”  It implies how we are going to show love, value love and share love. It is simply tells us that loving our own self will lead to despise God but if we really love God we must disregard our own life. How meaningful this dictum is! To love is to empty oneself for God and for others. Without emptying oneself, one cannot truly love. It is frivolous and difficult to think that we must leave everything, our preoccupations with vested interests and desires before we can directly tell that we can love. Total submission to God and freed ourselves so that love can have a place in our hearts. We are not like Stoics and Epicurian philosophers who place man’s highest good in the spirit and material pleasure respectively. But we are man who lives according to ourselves. The root of all is love.

We are called to be witnesses of God’s love to the world. We are in different vocation or calling but love is the primary source and living evidence of its existence. It is our own prerogative on how to live in God’s love. If one has a genuine and deep love of God, one will be compelled by this force to love one’s brothers and sisters in Christ in a very concrete way. There will be no reason for jealousy but a real interest in helping one another as God wants us to be. So, do not worry in our ups and downs. Let us be optimistic in looking forward in living in the love of God. Yes, we encountered negative experiences – minuses but it can transform to positive and pluses if I will think and follow the right mental process. To love God alone and with Him is a journey towards our eternal happiness.

A Critique on Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Introduction

In our modern time, we are confronted with several disorders which discovered daily. Due to state-of-the-art technology, many inventions that made us to live in an “instant” world of comfort but it somehow triggers to complication of negative effects. Devastated environment, frequent executions of heinous crimes, banalization of immoral and unethical human conduct such as induced abortion, pre-marital sex, concubinage and killings are concerns that we are facing nowadays. The point that the researcher is trying to present is the effect it subdues to our existence as human beings. The life span we have today tends to be shorter as we approach every generation. This is the right time to reflect what is behind this predicament happened in realm per se.
Sciences are systems of knowledge that present in arena of our battle towards better life. Specifically, in the field of health care, medicine is very active in promoting such for it provides medicines, involve in different surgical operations and cure diseases just to sustain life. In this new trend of medical technology, since the disorders of short life span due to some common and uncommon diseases are becoming more prevalent, a new line of research is likely to be necessary. Consequently, it is now rampant phenomena among highly industrialized country such as United States, Australia, Italy, South Korea, China, Japan, Singapore and maybe later on if it necessitate by the call for any urgent situation and time here in Philippines, it would not be possible. It is the Human Embryonic Stem Cell research. This HESC research has a goal of identifying the mechanism that governs cell differentiation and to turn it into specific cell types that can be used for treating debilitating and life-threatening diseases and injuries. Furthermore, it enlivens much hope to relieve and to alleviate the human suffering brought on by the effects of diseases and injuries. According to Stem Cell Information, stem cells can be a cure to any diseases ranging from Type1 diabetes and heart diseases to Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis. It is a bright light to many people darkened by disease because of their potential to cure or eliminate the disorder rather that suppress it as most drugs currently act.
At a rapid pace of scientific developments has been proceeding over decades. In human genetics as the nature of HESC research, somehow has this been more true. Every now and then, we may hear and amaze of new discoveries, procedures, applications or developments. With these complexities that we have now in the status quo, where are we now with our life? Do we still accord with values, with ethical norms, with morality?
These questions are mainstreams of uncertainties that we hold and continue to challenge our existence as human being endowed with rationality and moral values and practices that are objective and universal truths in which it is along with our nature, being. Notwithstanding, the tremendous therapeutic promise and benefits of HESC research to human race, still it has met with controversies and oppositions. In this exposition, what is this HESC research all about that despite its good possible outcome and greater help to many who need such procedure seems to be cunning its fecund purpose. What is the stand of the Church, of the Natural Law tradition? What is this Natural Law Ethics according to St. Thomas Aquinas?
This is the main impetus that pushes the researcher to conduct a critique from the perspective of morality of HESC research.

Human Embryonic Stem Cell

HESCs are characterized by their capacity for self-renewed and their ability to differentiate into all types of cells of the body (Ethics of Stem Cell Research, 2008). One stem cell that have been converted into the desired type, they can be targeted to the area and eventually replace the damaged cells that cause several diseases. In the very early embryo these cells are totipotent – that is, they have the potency to become any kind of body cell. HESCs are derived in vitro around the fifth day of the embryos’ development (Thomson et al., 1998). It is a day-5 human embryo consists of approximately of 200-250 cells. Most of these cells are compose of tropoblast considered as the outermost layer of the blastocyst. For about 30-34 cells are the number of cells to be harvested from the inner cell mass of blastocyst. In this process with nature of procedure, it requires the removal of the tropoblast. Consequently, it will result to disaggregate the blastocysts’ cells as to eliminate its potential for the development. That is why, most of the proponents of HESC research argue that the research is morally impermissible because it involves the unjust killing of the innocent beings.
Eventually, there are two kinds of stem cell, the human embryonic stem cell and the adult stem cell. In adult stem cells, the cells are pluripotent—they have the capacity to become a variety of cells, but not all. Those adult stem cells (those extracted from the spinal cord and marrow) can be used instead of those from embryos with the same effect. This is simply not true. Only embryonic stem cells have the ability to divide into every type of cell in the body (totipotent), while “adult” stem cells derived from other sources can only develop into a few types of cells (multipotent) and do not have the vast potential of embryos (Daniel et al.). In addition to that, many argued that adult stem cells are difficult to obtain, very hard to coax into developing into other tissues and, consequently, their use would involve much more time and money to obtain the desired results. Up until very recently, this was generally true. Thus, the researcher much prefers the human embryonic stem cells. This kind of stem cell is now at stake as a particular kind of ethical problem as the very much concern of this research.

When life begins?
Human embryos are human beings. This issue of when a human being begins to exist is, however, a contested one. The most prevalent standard view is that a human being begins to exist with the emergence of the one-cell zygote at fertilization. At this stage, human embryos are said to be “whole living member[s] of the species homo sapiens … [which] possess the epigenetic primordial for self-directed growth into adulthood, with their determinateness and identity fully intact” (George & Gomez-Lobo 2002, 258). On this account, it confers that human embryo has the right to live and not to be killed. This view is grounded in the assumption that human beings have the same moral status at all stages of their lives in possessing this right.
However, some human embryo does not have the moral status requisite for a right to life. This suggests that only some higher-order mental capacity (or capacities) that grounds the right to life. While there is no consensus about the capacities that are necessary for the right to life, some of the capacities that have been proposed include reasoning, self-awareness, and agency (Kuhse & Singer 1992, Tooley 1983, Warren 1973). Thus, it presumes that for those who have such lack these capacities like infants are excluded on the moral status as of possessing this right. This presents a challenge for those who hold that the non-consequentialist constraints on killing human children and adults apply to early human infants. Some reject that these constraints apply to infants, and allow that there may be circumstances where it is permissible to sacrifice infants for the greater good (McMahan 2007b).
On the other hand, some grant and somehow accept that human embryo lack the properties or capacities to a right to life, but hold that they possess an intrinsic value that calls for a measure of respect and places at least some moral constraints on their use: “The life of a single human organism commands respect and protection … no matter in what form or shape, because of the complex creative investment it represents and because of our wonder at the divine or evolutionary processes that produce new lives from old ones.” (Dworkin, l992). There are, however, divergent views about the equal respect of embryos and somehow command limitations exist on their use. Some opponents of HESC research hold that the treatment of human embryos as mere research tools always fails to manifest proper respect for them.

Christian Perspective

With the vast issue about the morality of Human Embryonic Stem Cell research, the researcher can philosophize that it truly points and directs us to study and scrutinize its unprecedented implications in this-world of genetic engineering and to our human existence as well. Different views from different realm of ethicist, different perspective from religious sector and even to the plausible opinions of person in authority are being raised just to question the morality it connotes to human race.
Consistently, the Catholic Church stands and firmly holds its doctrine in promoting respect, protection and promotion of human life from conception to its natural end. Both the Church and the Philippine Constitution tangled up recognizing the sacredness of life from the time of conception. From fertilization through fetal life, until birth the human being must be protected (Alova, 1999). Indeed, human being must be respected-as-a-person from the very first instant of his existence. At the Second Vatican Council, the church for her part presented once again to modern man her constant and certain doctrine according to which:
“Life once conceived, must be protected with the utmost care; abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes.”
More recently, the Charter of the Rights of the Family, published by the Holy See, confirmed that “Human life must be absolutely respected and protected from the moment of conception.”
The Catholic Church gives emphasis for high appreciation to every human life that opposes the direct killing or injuring of any innocent human being, even an embryo. Furthermore, she believes that human life begins at conception and conception is the beginning to possess the right to life. In addition to that, here is the authoritative teaching of the church stated in Pope John Paul II’s encyclical letter, “Evangelium Vitae,” no. 60:
Furthermore, what is at stake is so important that, from the standpoint of moral obligation, the mere probability that a human person is involved would suffice to justify an absolutely clear prohibition of any intervention aimed at killing a human embryo. Precisely for this reason, over and above all scientific debates and those philosophical affirmations to which the Magisterium has not expressly committed itself, the Church has always taught and continues to teach that the result of human procreation, from the first moment of its existence, must be guaranted that unconditional respect which is morally due to the human being in his or her totality and unity as body and spirit: “The human being is to be respected and treated as human person from the moment of conception; and therefore from that same moment his rights as  a person must be recognized, among which , in the first place, is the inviolable right of every innocent human being to life.”
The church with her teaching is really standing firm in securing and protecting the life from exploitation or from using them as an object of experimentation. Thus, in doing such thing, it constitutes a crime against the dignity of a person, of human being who has the same right and respect owed to a child or to adult person once born, anyone just as to every person.
Christian ethics puts stem cell research into question precisely because it involves the manipulation of human embryo or fetus. Stem cell research in a form of IVF(in vitro) or a laboratory fertilization, which involves conception outside the womb by artificial means.
Ultimately each of us will die anyway, or we should say, we are all destined to die but that gives no one a right to kill us. Our society does not permit lethal experiments on terminally ill patients or condemned prisoners on the pretext that they will die soon anyway. Likewise, the fact that an embryonic human being is at risk in case of being abandoned by his or her parents gives no individual or government a right to intervene and directly kill that human being first.

St. Thomas Aquinas’ Natural Law

The natural law as expounded by Aquinas is nothing but a participation of the eternal law in the rational creature that is man. Natural law in this context is the particularity of the eternal law in the human person. In so far as God has a plan or purpose for all things, both animate and inanimate, so then he is said to have set up the nature of the human person in such a way that all his actions should take.
From this also comes the dictate of reason to avoid what is not in agreement with the nature of human persons. In here, Aquinas appears to be confident that each person has the innate capability to discover within himself some objective, universal, and necessary laws of right conduct and of morality. Law, therefore, in this sense, can be considered as an ordering of some kind whereby the pattern of activities of a being reaches its perfection or proper end, which is the very reason why that being is created in the very first place by the supreme creator and divine author of nature which is God Himself (Fernandez, 2006).
Consequently, the nature of the human person is viewed as constantly conserving man in being and is Himself the fulfillment of human striving. Thus, the action of man as rational being should reflect respect and reverence toward God as the ultimate author of nature and preserver of life and everything that is good.
For Aquinas, therefore, natural law in essence is an integral part of the divine law or plan for the entire universe. Most Aquinas’ teachings in this respect are found in his magnum opus, the Summa Theologica or the Summary of Faith. Here, he taught that the moral law consists in the following the innate and natural tendencies or inclinations of our nature as humans. These basic and natural human tendencies or inclinations that are essentially present in all of us are: self – preservation or survival, that is, man has to preserve himself in existence; propagation of our species, that is, to unite sexually to produce offspring for the continuance of the next generation of the human race; to live in peace and in harmony with other men, that is, just and fair dealings with others, and to seek for truth and knowledge of God, that is, to use his will and intellect to know the truth and seek the good, including his highest good, which is eternal happiness with God (Fernandez, 2006).
            In Aquinas’ ethical framework,
…the natural law belongs to those things to which a man is inclined naturally; and among these it is proper to man to be inclined to act according to reason…Hence the [first] precept of law [is] good is to be done and promoted, and evil is to be avoided. All other precepts of the natural law are based upon this; so that all things which the practical reason naturally apprehends as man’s good belong to the precepts of the natural law under the form of things to be done or avoided… Therefore, the order of the precepts of the natural law is according to the order of natural inclinations. (Quoted in Pojman 2002:44).
Moreover, the principle of the inviolability of human life springs from the essential belief that life, any human life, is of infinite value as it is a sacred and precious gift from the Almighty Creator. The importance or value of this life is complementary or the same to other human beings in this world. Thus, it can never be sacrificed or exploited by whatever means or reasons.
In this context, no ones life is important that others. All lives have the same worth and no point that life cannot be merit against the other. Each individual life is much important and it itself beyond measure or immeasurable.
This principle applies to every human life, including the life of the unborn (fetus) that is still in the process of developing in the womb of the mother. The unborn, even in the earliest stages of growth does have all the basic natural right to life that must be protected from any harm (Fernandez, 2006).
Thus, equal dignity and respect must be given to every human life. Accordingly, fetuses or embryos have the same reverence with the adult one. Our status in the society does not tolerate us to quantify or measure the value of life.
Under the ethical principle of natural law, each person has a natural right to live and to continue in existence. Anything that will obstruct or put in jeopardy that natural basic drive and tendency goes against what is considered good. It is therefore morally justified for anyone to do whatever is necessary to protect that right, provided no unjust harm is done to others (Fernandez, 2006).
Hence, the human embryonic stem cell research is irrelevant in a sense though it protects of prolongs the life of a person; still it provides unjust dealing or destruction to others specifically to the innocent embryonic possessing life.
On the other hand, the principle of stewardship based on natural law inclines us to believe and convince that all life comes from God. Thus, we are not the owner of this life. It is only a borrowed one. We do not have the same authority to do whatever what we want. Notwithstanding, we just only owe this life. We only have given the power to take good care of it. Subsequently, we have to propagate it, share it, and fulfill it to the fullest.
It is therefore morally wrong or unjustifiable to commit actions that can harm others specifically human embryonic stem cell research since stewardship entails proper protection and responsible care of what the Almighty has given. It goes without saying therefore that it is only God who has dominion over life and our bodies. Our duty is to take care of it until God takes it back from us in His own good time (Timbreza, 1993).
Consequently, we human beings do not own it but rather, we are just caretakers to protect it as our enormous responsibility. It is not just a personal or individual responsibility. It is a collective obligation for it must involve the whole community.

Conclusion

As human being, we possess that faculty which somehow dominates other living creatures, our rationality. Being rational is our identity to have that capacity to think and to possess will. Thus, we have that supreme worth and profound dignity due to the fact that we are rational agents. Whereupon, we can think and decide what goal we may pursue and what we want to our life. Thereby, our capacity to determine our vintage uniqueness as human being endowed with rational faculty lies on ourselves on how we could find our destiny or end as a self-directed and conscious being. Moreover, treating human beings as objects, manipulating or exploiting is undignified act and absolutely not in accordance to its nature.
The value that he endowed is the true manifestation of his nature. Consequently, a person cannot be treated as an object of experimentation at any means of his existence. The worth belongs to other person and to the one who value it and it is unconditioned worth. We have the responsibility to respect each other as human beings. Respect on their nature is much important and that really matters on the person.
The issue about when life begins remains doubtful in the field of science but then on the side of the church and natural law are still pinning on their own stands that life begins as early as fertilization occurs. Given that doubt, the researcher would rather say that it is unacceptable or permissible immoral to get involved in such kind of practice or research. The presumptions that the science deals with regarding the beginning of life are still uncertain vis-à-vis to the argument of the church and natural law regarding this matter which the researcher prefers to stand for. Consequently, life starts from fertilization and indeed capable of possessing rights and dignity as human being.
Human being should be the ground of morality in which it value life, truth and goodness. Thus, the use of human embryos or fetuses, either inside or outside the mothers’ womb, as the object of experimentation, enacts a crime against the persons’ human dignity, the right to life. Indeed, life is sacred.
Hence, with our rationality, we have that capacity to think and to exercise our own freedom and reason in determining what is good for us and for others. We are the makers, arbiters and promulgators of goodness to human race.
Human dignity is innate in us. It is intrinsic attributes within us. It speaks of what we are, who we are and determines or guides how we might live in, live by, live for. Without this, we are nothing; we are empty. So, think as rational, decide as rational, and act as rational by preserving life, protecting life and propagating our species.

Is Knowledge Possible?

BY
LO IVAN REYES CASTILLON

From the moment we were born in this world, we started to grasp everything, one by one, step by step. We can say based on our experience that we know nothing as we open our eyes for the first time. I might believe now what John Locke was trying to present in that sense is true. We tried to relate ourselves to the world for us to know, to learn. Until such time, we went to school for formal education which the primary aim was for knowledge. For what? If I would try to believe it, then, how true it is of its promise of having good life of having such knowledge? Is it possible to have such? It is very crucial for us to believe in knowledge. But as rational being, we are expected to wonder, to search for the meaning, the truthfulness it brings, for all the things that brought us to confusions and doubts. We search for something. In a long run of my discussion, I will try to find means to answer my queries, all the questions that tickling in my mind, of the things that really bothers me.
I would like to start with the main point of the subject that somehow ruined my life, triggered my migraine, waking my appetite in everyday that I enter the class. I am not that in real torment, a life or death choice, but it somehow pushed me to learn, to study. I would say I am just pressured. But in the end, I am partly satisfied with what I learned for I know there are more things to learn.
Epistemology has been commonly defined as branch of philosophy which deals with different theories of knowledge. Yes, this is evidently true. However, I think on some point for it is just some portion of reality that we have.  With Zagzebski’s characterization of epistemology which is the study of right or good way of grasping cognitive reality will tell us that this entity is not purely study of knowledge but of even ethical way of life. She also added that is the study of the other desirable ways in looking for truth.
Both perspectives about epistemology are true. They point to certain direction, certain predicament, certain end – truth. Is knowledge possible there are different theories of knowledge? They explain different ways on how to acquire such.  Further, they offer significant reflection and reasonable claims on how knowledge attained. Whatever they may believe is very helpful for us nowadays in recalling those theories they had to understand fully the things or the knowledge we have today.  At some point, they created a great avenue to find the source of knowledge so that we may not gullible of such deceiver.  Certainty and understanding possessed their claims. However, it strengthens us that this study will also guide us of what should and ought for us to do.
Absolutely, knowledge is good. If we are going to reflect its implication nowadays, we may say that knowledge is the center of our growth, main ingredients for our main menu of truth – in searching for truth.
Let us take a glimpse of how knowledge relates to certainty and understanding. During the ancient and medieval times, certainty is given much focused. The validity of reality held on the belief of certainty and go against on the value of dubitable areas of the external world. Everything is given the idea that what reality is what is conceived by reason that of having certainty. This posits much concern and over emphasis on the use of reason. However, as the philosophy journey its tremendous works of wondering, understanding came to savor the ideas of things even it is metaphysical as long as the basis would be precisely rational enterprise. That is why, according to the epistemologists, it is better to look back on the questions, what is knowledge? Is knowledge possible? How do we acquire knowledge? It may surely lead us to certainty and understanding that knowledge is good and good enough of worth of our effort in striving so hard to know such, to have such.
Knowledge and beliefs have become the part and parcel of human existence. But how they differ? Knowledge has different meaning formulated and developed by philosophers and writers as time went on.  Knowledge as some says it is the way of believing the cognitive way in regards to its formal justification. It is a justified belief. It is something that is proven to be true. It is not considered knowledge if it does not pass in the verifiability of experimentation or observation as to prove its existence to be true. Belief, on the other hand, refers to the concept acceptable whether it is true or false of certain people or group. Other also would say that belief is just believing the things even out of reason, uncritical innocence or we can say in the state of first naiveté. Then, it is true to say that knowledge might be a belief and belief might be knowledge. However, not all belief is knowledge in the sense that there are some beliefs that are false belief.
Desirable life demands caring. It is said that we care about many things and we tend to be conscientious of the things we care about. Yes, it is true. We must be. Do. And act. The more we care about something, the more conscientious we must be so that the trust and certainty of the belief we had may prolong and lead to a desirable epistemic good life.
Conscientious belief is an attitude of caring about the true beliefs – for truth in a sense. We need to be conscientious so that we may not be gullible of any deceiver of true beliefs so as to care the things we care about with compassion and love. It is also non optional to be conscientious in our beliefs if we are going to contextualize it in morality. It will lead us to a good and right way to grasp the reality cognitively on the basis of morality. Knowing the beliefs which is conscientious belief will motivate us to care about in that domain and posit with certainty of being true. Thus, this will lead to trust towards the desirable life.
There are two ways that caring imposes a demand for conscientious belief. First, there is a demand to be conscientious in whatever beliefs we have in that domain. This implies that we already established the beliefs of certain point and consequently, caring is manifested. Furthermore, we need to be conscientious of that belief. We are not just accepting things as they are.  Instead we tend to involve ourselves in wonder, in act of questioning for we demand for a true belief. That is a manifestation that we become conscientious to our beliefs in particular domain. It is somehow that we have beliefs from the start that we are not pretty sure of its certainty, for we may deceive by such gullible deceiver. On the other hand, there is a demand to acquire conscientious beliefs in that domain. This entails our responsibility or maybe our natural inclination to demand in acquiring conscientious beliefs. We should bear in mind that caring demands us to desirable life or other way around. If this is so, we need to be caring to those things we care about or in the domain to get conscientious beliefs. For an instance, we go to school to study, to learn and to acquire new knowledge. Acquiring new learning experiences as we expected to have is a way of acquiring or demanding fro conscientious beliefs in the domain of education. These provide a venue for us to ne conscientious in such a way.
However, even though how meticulous we are, sometimes we cannot avoid to encounter some circumstances that somehow our desirability of one’s life will be shaken because of false belief that we are confronting. That is why we need that mechanism to sort out false belief from true or conscientious belief to recover and regain the trust we have from things we care about. With that trust and confidence that we have conscientious belief will lead us to epistemic good life.
In searching for truth, for knowledge, we may encounter a bullshit. It is a speech that does not show any proper concern for the truth. A bullshiter tends to pretend that he holds the truth where in fact he does not. On the other hand, there are also lies. A liar may have the capacity to tell the truth but he chooses not to say so. A truth-teller and a liar play the opposite but of the same game. The bullshiter plays another or different game but pretending of playing the same game. Indeed, how hard it is to be in this world full of complexities, full of confusions, of deceivers.
The skeptics as well provide several attacks and arguments against proponents of truth, of philosophy of how knowledge, is true and possible. This is not to undermine the existing belief that we have but it is to strengthen and be conscientious of what we believe. This response makes a true belief in an instance of knowledge in forming it by reliable process for obtaining the truth. It enlivens the argument that the experience, the environment is reliable in obtaining truth.
With strong constraints being put to validate the true knowledge or knowledge itself, we may find it hard to accept things that we know or cognize as such. Several criteria presented by many philosophers of what really knowledge is. However, this problem of criterion appears a just mere theory for some of its arguments posits only to the ways in which people think or to ways in which they use their language. Other would say that evidences will showcase true knowledge. I am partly agreed. But according to Chisholm (1966) in his theory of knowledge posted this query about the role of evidence in determining the trueness of a thing, what is it to have evidence and how are we to decide in any particular case whether or not we do have evidence? The depth of these questions really questioned the evidence as the foundation of searching for truth, for knowledge, justified knowledge I would say. Let us take for an instance, we have good evidence, eventually when scientists had declared that there were nine planets, for believing that claim. This evidence consists of various other facts we know about astronomy but it does not itself include the fact that there were nine planets. Should we say that, although it may be possible to know that there were nine planets, it is not possible to know that we know that there were nine planets? Or does the evidence that we have for believing that there were nine planets somehow guarantee that the belief is true and therefore guarantee that there were nine planets? This had been what we argued before. All the evidences were presented to prove that the truthfulness it possessed. Consequently, it may dismay us when the new study result appears that, it was just a false belief where in fact we have only eight planets. This example is just one of the many instances in the realm of knowledge wherein evidences showed its inconsistency. Before, we believed on it as true knowledge. However, this had changed when we confronted with the new declaration of knowledge. This may lead us to doubt that even the things that we believe today as true knowledge may appear to be as just false belief later on if the new discovery will come out. Thus, this makes knowledge somehow not possible.
We may argue that in evidence for some things, it would seem, consists of the fact that we have evidence for other things. Either we could justify the claim to know any particular one of these things; we can be led back, in the manner described, to various things that are directly evident. It speaks that this phenomenon we are experiencing in the present, the whole of what we know, at any given time, is a kind of structure having its foundation in what happens to be directly evident at that time. Our task then is to prepare ourselves of this claim that the foundation serves to support the rest of the structure.
On my stand, with all the discussions and researches, with all the reasoning and readings, with all the arguments and skeptical attacks presented, it never undermines my belief that knowledge is possible. Though many would argue that in several circumstances, we may end up to question this claim, still, it just strengthens the belief and the truthfulness of the knowledge that we possessed. From the point that we argue, we reason out, we deliberate, it justifies that we think, that we possess knowledge and we try to utilize it. It is very important that we must not just a “piggy bank” that our minds are mere storage of ideas. It also conforms to the philosophy of Whitehead (1929) that “the utilization of knowledge to a particular end is a worthwhile learning for”. This knowledge that we acquired will make us to be truly human, rational. All these are knowledge, we justify it with what we learned which also a form of knowledge. We should not put ourselves in a dire place isolated on a certain framework that would lead us to claim that we know nothing. Wake up? We are learned fro we believe that we possess knowledge. We need it. Thus, we must continue to strive, to stride, in the continuing pursuits of finding the real realm of reality in the context of knowledge. The most important thing is we must be convinced that we know something and we are capable of knowing.
In conclusion, I would like to say, no matter how brilliant we are, still, we are craving for knowledge.  That is why until now, we are still studying the study of knowledge and what encompasses it. That is why, we still searching, still wondering for truth which is the common denominator of all these endeavors. Thank you for the epistemology.
